Purple Martins are the largest of the swallow family.
These small birds average in size from 7 to 8 1/2 inches.
The adult male is dark steel-blue while the female and immature males are darkish gray with a light
colored belly.
They are distinguishable by their cheerful chatter of clicks and liquid gurgling
warble. They are streamlined birds looking almost like swept-wing aircraft in flight.
The Purple Martin lives in colonies and is very socially interactive. They arrive in the southern U.S.
usually beginning as early as January from their long flight from Brazil. After a few days of rest, nesting can begin almost
immediately.
The birds prefer open areas. If you are planning a colony choose an open area without trees or other obstructions. There
are many excellent web sites offering information if you choose to become a "landlord" to these delightful birds.
